Weinman's famous Liberty Walking Towards the Dawn of a New Day design for the half dollar issued from 1916 to 1947.
From 1986 to 2021, the American Eagle silver dollar reverse featured the Heraldic Eagle honoring the Great Seal of the United States by Chief Engraver John Mercanti. On the coin's 35th anniversary in 2021, the U.S. Mint unveiled a new reverse design by natural science illustrator Emily Damstra. It depicts a landing eagle, wings dramatically spread and talons firmly holding an oak branch, a symbol of strength and independence.
