Tesla immigrated to the U.S. in 1884. He sold the patent rights to his system of AC dynamos, transformers, and motors to George Westinghouse. In 1893, Tesla’s AC current was used to light the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago which led to a winning contract to make the first water-powered machinery at Niagara Falls. Another invention, the Tesla coil, allowed for the wireless transfer of electricity for such applications as radio, telegraphy and TV.
