Following the Russian Revolution of 1917, Latvia declared its independence in November of 1918. Just 22 years later, as World War II was beginning in Europe, Latvia was annexed to the Soviet Union – which retained control until 1991.

Nearly the size of a classic U.S. silver dollar, this 5 Lati was struck just three years from 1929-1932. The obverse shows a crowned maiden facing right, with ears of grain on her shoulder representing wealth. Latvia's coat of arms adorns the reverse, supported by a lion and griffin.
