Pulled from the waters of Manila Bay, these 1907-1909 one Peso coins are true World War II relics. Originally struck in 80% silver at the San Francisco Mint for use in the Philippines, more than 15 million pesos were dumped into the bay in 1942 to keep them from enemy hands. During the war the Japanese attempted to retrieve the sunken treasure, but were unable due to the dangers of decompression sickness. Since the war’s end, more than 8 million coins have been recovered – and experts estimate that another 3.5 million could still be waiting on the bottom of the ocean floor.

The obverse of this silver peso displays a woman holding a hammer with a smoking volcano on her right.
