These silver dollar-sized pieces are the most widely used trade coins in history! Called “Thalers” (which is the origin of the word “dollar”), the 83.3% silver coins feature the bust of Maria Theresa, Empress of the Holy Roman Empire, on the obverse. Austrian arms appear on the reverse.

Restruck at various mints since Empress Maria Theresa's death in 1780 – including Vienna, London, Paris and Rome – the date of 1780 on the coins remained the same, a mark of genuineness to populations where many of the coins circulated.
