This note honors the Comstock Lode and the Carson City Mint. As prospectors searched for gold near Carson City in 1859, they tossed aside the heavy black soil surrounding their treasure. Before long, a sample was sent to California for assaying... which showed that the “heavy black stuff” was incredibly rich in silver, yielding $4,700 a ton! The Comstock Lode’s riches had been revealed, and soon a new mint facility in Carson City would begin striking the precious ore into silver dollars.
