Flying Eagle Cents (1856-1858)

America’s original small cent design – the

Flying Eagle cent

– was authorized under the Small Cent Act of 1857. True to its name, the Flying Eagle cent depicts a soaring eagle on the obverse, and the denomination within a wreath on the reverse. Struck for just three short years (patterns were issued in 1856), classic Flying Eagle cents endure as a favorite among collectors.
