The U.S. Government began granting charters to banks, which could then issue National Bank Notes, in 1863. National Bank Notes bore the issuing bank's charter number and a serial number. National Bank Notes of the first charter period were issued 1863-1902. The second charter period was 1882-1902, with National Bank Notes issued until 1922.
