US Mint and Proof Sets
US Mint Sets & Proof Sets
They're the pride of the US Mint – official US Mint and Proof Sets! These annual coin sets represent the best of the best – examples of each regular-issue coin for any given year, presented together in officially-sealed packaging.
High-quality Uncirculated coins
Issued since 1947, US Mint Sets contain one coin of each denomination from every mint that struck them for circulation (coins in US Mint Sets are typically from the Philadelphia and Denver Mints, though some years include special coins from the San Francisco or West Point Mints). Packaged especially for collectors, these handsome Uncirculated Mint Sets are issued in strictly limited quantities.
From 1965-2006, US Mint Sets were issued in traditional Pliofilm packaging, with each mint's coins sonically sealed in protective pockets. When Presidential dollars debuted in 2007, new folder packaging was introduced that contains coin specifications and allows a clear view of the obverse, reverse and edge inscriptions.
The highest-quality US coins come presented as official mint-sealed Proof Sets. Proof Sets contain special versions of each coin denomination and design issued by the U.S. Mint in any given year.
The term "Proof" refers to how the coin is made – not its condition. Proofs are made in limited quantities with specially buffed and polished dies and coin blanks. The blanks are hand fed into a specially adapted coin press. Each Proof is struck at least twice, at slow speed and with extra pressure. This creates sharp, high-relief designs against brilliant mirrorlike surfaces, and Proofs from the prestigious San Francisco Mint represent the finest examples of minting art. These limited-issue coins in mint-sealed sets are always highlights in any collection!
Special Mint Sets
Because of a coin shortage during the mid-1960s, the US Mint did not release US Mint and Proof Sets from 1965-1967. Instead, they released Special Mint Sets featuring extra-high-quality Uncirculated coins during those years.Read More... Read Less...
