Vitellius was the third ruler in what is known as The Year of Four Emperors. He gradually left the government to his disreputable freeman Asiaticus and focused his attention on lavish banquets and eating. In July A.D. 69, the eastern armies shifted their loyalty to Vespasian, and by December, Vitellius was without supporters. After he was murdered, Vespasian's soldiers dragged his lifeless body through the streets.
