As the second ruler in what became known as the Year of Four Emperors, Otho gained the support of Praetorian Guard who had been slighted by Galba, and the senate reluctantly supported him. Yet he was only to rule for three months because the armies in the Rhine proclaimed Vitellius emperor. During his short rule, he showed wisdom and ability.
