Claudius suffered from infantile paralysis and was considered dull-witted. He was passed over for government office. After Caligula was murdered, oman legions forced the Senate to proclaim Claudius emperor. In his dealings with the Senate, Claudius avoided confrontation while trying to reduce their power. During his reign, Britain was conquered and five new territories were added. His 4th wife Agrippina, the mother of Nero, poisoned Claudius in A.D. 54.
