Flavius Arcadius was born A.D. 377, eldest son of Theodosius I. When Theodosius died, young Arcadius became emperor of the Eastern Empire, and his younger brother, Honorius, became emperor of the west. Since they were so young, court officials ruled in their names. Arcadius was controlled by a series of officials until his wife, Aelia Eudoxia, became Augusta (Empress). She controlled the Eastern Empire until her death in A.D. 404. Arcadius died in A.D. 408, almost unknown to the populace.
