This bronze reduced Follis marks the first time in over 30 years that a coin had been struck for an important woman of the Roman Empire. Aelia Flaccilla was the wife of Theodosius I, ruler in the east, and was the mother of Arcadius and Honorius. She was well known for her piety and generosity to the poor. According to historical sources, she died between A.D. 386/8.
