Widely considered the last great ruler of the western Roman Empire, Valentinian I was the son of a Roman army general. He became emperor in 364, taking command of the Western Empire and naming his brother Valens co-emperor and ruler of the Eastern Empire. Valentinian I successfully defended Gaul, Britain and African provinces against barbarian invaders. While negotiating with barbarians in 375, he was seized with an apoplectic fit and soon died.
