Vetranio served under both Constantine and Constans. When the rebel Magnentius attempted to win the army`s loyalties, there was a danger that Vetranio`s troops might change sides. Constantius II`s sister convinced Vetranio to become emperor, and the army to support him. Vetranio then acted as a buffer between the rebel army and Constantius until danger passed. He abdicated and was allowed to live out his life peacefully.
