Carinus was the eldest son of Carus, and was left in charge of the western provinces while his father and younger brother fought in the east. When his brother died, Carinus had a series of rebellions to put down. One of those rebellions was led by the future emperor Diocletian. When Carinus and Diocletian met on the battlefield, it appeared that Carinus was going to be successful, so a group of officers murdered him.
