Claudius II reigned from A.D. 268 to 270. This able, respected leader first gained fame in wars against forces. When Emperor Gallienus was slain in A.D. 268, Claudius II was proclaimed emperor by the Roman army senate. As emperor, he sought to re-establish law, order and the Empire`s former greatness. Claudius II defeated a large army of invading barbarian Goths, but he died of an epidemic plague brought by Goths to Roman territories.
