Philip I was a crafty soldier who became Praetorian Prefect (leader of the Praetorian Guard) after murdering his predecessor. He arranged the murder of Emperor Gordian III in A.D. 244. Soon after, his troops declared him emperor. During his reign, Rome celebrated its 1,000th anniversary. Philip I was slain during a rebellion led by his own men.
