Severus Alexander (known as Alexander) was adopted by his cousin Elagabalus, and later succeeded him on the throne. The real power during his reign was his mother. She even selected his wife and later banished her to Africa because of jealousy. Because he preferred peaceful means rather than the use of arms in settling disputes, his troops thought of him as cowardly, and eventually disposed of both Alexander and his mother.
