Discover the once-legendary city of Lugdunum with this scarce silver Denarius struck from A.D. 195-197 during the brief reign of Clodius Albinus. For three centuries, Lugdunum was the most important Roman city in northwestern Europe. This provincial capital, with a population as large as 50,000, became the site of the bloodiest and hardest-fought battle ever waged between opposing Roman forces!
Clodius Albinus, commander of Roman legions in Britain, Spain and Gaul, was declared emperor by his own troops in late 195 – and was soon declared a public enemy by Emperor Septimus Severus in Rome. Their armies met in Lugdunum on February 19 of A.D. 197 in an epic battle involving up to 150,000 Roman troops between the two forces. When Severus prevailed, Albinus fled and committed suicide. The great Roman city of Lugdunum never recovered from the devastation of the battle, and began its decline as an administrative and urban center.
