Valerius Gratus, prefect (governor) of Judaea struck this coin during Tiberius` reign. Only names of the Roman imperial family appear on the coins of the prefects. The obverse bears Tiberius` name: TIB KAICAP (Tiberius Caesar), surrounded by a wreath. His mother`s name, Julia, in Greek IOYAIA (note, first A: is the Greek symbol lambda). A palm branch curving to the right is on the reverse; beneath is the date LE (year 5).
