In Mark 12:14-17, a Jewish high priest, in an effort to trick Jesus into making a statement of treason, asked him whether it was lawful to pay tribute unto Caesar. In response, Jesus asked to see the silver Denarius that deified the ruler. Aware of the attempted plot, he said diplomatically, "Render unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's; and render unto God the things which are God's."
