Antoninus came from a wealthy, diplomatic family. At the age of 33 he served as Consul for the first time and eventually became Proconsul in Asia. His service in government brought him to the attention of the current emperor, Hadrian, who adopted him as his heir. When Hadrian died Antoninus became emperor. With his rule the Roman Empire entered into one of its most tranquil periods ever. This silver denarius was struck after Antoninus' death and celebrates his deification.
