Struck in silver from A.D. 138-161, each unique coin depicts Antoninus Pius who ruled for nearly 25 years during Rome’s Golden Age of peace and prosperity. Considered the fourth of Rome’s “Five Good Emperors,” Antoninus suppressed a rebellion, contained four revolts, extended the empire’s northern border by 36 miles and, when his wife died, founded a charitable institution in her memory for daughters of the poor.
The inscription DIVVS (DIVUS) on the obverse indicates this coin was issued after Antoninus Pius’s death to celebrate his deification. It shows that in the eye of the Roman people, Antoninus Pius was as revered as the gods. Reverse designs vary.
