Herod I was King of Judaea by Rome`s authority. Though Herod is remembered for many cruelties, the worst deed assigned to him by history was the Massacre of the Innocents. Upon hearing the future King of the Jews had been born, Herod ordered the deaths of all male babies in Bethlehem. But it was his enormous building campaign that earned him the title "the Great".
