The 1862-1863 First Issue of fractional currency is often called postage currency. Civil War coin hoarding led Congress to authorize acceptance of postage stamps as currency. Then all the stamps disappeared, so small-denomination notes that looked like stamps were printed in 1862-1863. This First Issue 25¢ note, with brown face and black back, features Thomas Jefferson stamps of the era, has straight edges, and bears the American Bank Note Company`s monogram in the lower right corner on the back.
