Introduced in 2009, Native American dollars are successors to the original Sacagawea dollar of 2000-2008. They continue to honor Lewis & Clark’s Shoshone guide and interpreter on their obverse. However, they do not share the same reverse design. Native American dollars feature a new reverse each year honoring Native Americans and their contributions to the United States. The 2025 Sacagawea “gold” dollar celebrates Hawaiian scholar Mary Kawena Pukui, who worked to preserve Hawaii’s culture and heritage by interviewing older generations and recording oral traditions.
The 2025 Native American dollar coin’s reverse depicts Pukui wearing a hibiscus flower in her hair and a lei around her neck. The reverse also includes her name and the inscription nānā i ke kumu (“Look to the Source”). The obverse depicts Sacagawea and her infant son. While the date, mint mark and motto e pluribus unum (“Out of Many, One”) are inscribed along each coin’s edge. Add 2025 Mary Kawena Pukui dollar coins to your collection today!
