Each 1 oz., 99.9% pure silver coin displays a portion of the circa 1856-71 painting by George Caleb Bingham on its obverse. It shows General Washington on horseback crossing the Delaware, surrounded by his troops. When these Revolutionary War soldiers crossed the icy river overnight in December 1776, they were able to surprise the Hessians stationed in Trenton, securing an important victory in the fight for independence.
