Sixty-two years ago on January 20, 1961, President John F. Kennedy delivered an inspiring inaugural address containing this announcement: “The torch has been passed to a new generation of Americans.” And less than three years later, when his presidency was tragically cut so short, Kennedy half dollars were rushed into production to preserve the image and memory of the popular young leader.
Though minted each year since 1964, the number of Kennedy half dollars produced each year was cut dramatically in 2002. Since then, these coins have been struck only in very limited quantities for collectors – and few, if any, have ever been released into circulation.
