1953 Complete $5 Silver Certificate Set

This prized set recalls when paper money was redeemable for silver on demand! Included are the last three series of $5 Silver Certificates, which carry the promissory statement five dollars in silver payable to the bearer on demand. Each note bears the signatures of the Treasurer of the United States and Secretary of the Treasury, and whenever there is a change in office holders, a new letter is added to the series date. This historic set contains the 1953, 1953A & 1953B $5 Silver Certificates with Priest-Humphrey, Priest-Anderson and Smith-Dillon signatures respectively!

In the early 1960s, the precious metal value of silver dollar coins rose above their face value, prompting the public to redeem their Silver Certificates for silver coins. So Congress acted in June 1963 to abolish the silver notes and a year later, stopped redeeming them for silver dollars. No longer backed by silver, millions of the Silver Certificates with their distinctive blue serial numbers and seals were redeemed and destroyed. Within a decade, they had virtually disappeared from circulation.
