In great demand by collectors, the unusual Steel cent was only struck in 1943! To save copper for the war, in 1943 all U.S. cents were struck in zinc-coated steel. However, they soon corroded in moist conditions, and many survivors have been reprocessed. It was struck 80 years ago.
