The 90% silver Mercury dime debuted in 1916. Designed by A.A. Weinman, this handsome coin featured Liberty with wings symbolizing freedom of thought. However, the public thought the coin was the Roman messenger god Mercury, and the name "Mercury" dime stuck. This 1940 issue is now over 65 years old and recalls the release of the Disney hit Fantasia and FDR's reelection:
