The 1939-S Liberty Walking half dollar was struck at the modern new San Francisco minting facility opened in 1937. It replaced the venerable "Granite Lady," nickname of the second San Francisco Mint that operated from 1874 to 1937 and had withstood the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire.
