Although authorized in 1920 for the Alabama centennial, which was celebrated in 1919, these coins were not struck until 1921. Designed by Laura Gardin Fraser, the obverse features the busts of William Wyatt Bibb, first governor of Alabama, and T.E. Kilby, governor at the time of the centennial. This marked the first time a living person`s portrait appeared on a United States coin. Mintage of only 59,038. Make this historic coin part of your collection today!
