The $5 gold coins of 1908-1929 represented the first true American Indian to appear on a U.S. coin. While the $10 "Indian Head" gold coin was introduced a year earlier in 1907, its designer clearly stated that it portrays Liberty wearing an Indian headdress. The $5 Indian Head is also famous for its "incused relief" design, featuring devices sunken into the coin`s surface rather than raised above it. A scarce and sought-after collector favorite.
