These coins are named for their designer, Charles Barber – who served as chief engraver of the U.S. Mint from 1879-1917. All over 100 years old, these Barber dimes feature mintages of about 1% of current dime production. And few were saved, as a Barber dime would buy two loaves of bread, a gallon of gasoline or two tickets to a nickelodeon movie during its years of issue. In addition, millions were melted down for their bullion content during periods of high silver prices.
