The 1897 Liberty Head nickel was struck in Philadelphia during an exciting new era of entertainment in America. Many interesting coin-operated mechanical devices were being invented, and most required a nickel to enjoy. So, the Liberty Head nickels of 1883-1912 saw plenty of use in entertainment, as well as in general commerce. With a large Roman numeral five (V) on their reverse, these classic and popular 5¢ coins are also known as "V nickels" among collectors.
