The 1896 Liberty Head $20 gold piece (or double eagle) was struck over 110 years ago at the main U.S. Mint in Philadelphia. Designed by James B. Longacre, the Liberty Head double eagles of 1849-1907 feature an attractive, classic portrait of Liberty wearing a coronet inscribed liberty. The reverse depicts an eagle with a shield, and the motto in god we trustt was added to the reverse in 1866 - amid the religious fervor of the post-Civil War era.
