Struck over a century ago at the main U.S. Mint in Philadelphia, the 90% silver 1896 Barber half dollar is a prized numismatic and historical memento of the late 19th century. On August 16, 1896, a major discovery of gold was made on the Yukon River in northern Canada, not far from the border of Alaska. Also in 1896, the first automobiles made for commercial sale were produced by the Duryea Motor Company of Springfield, Massachusetts.
