The 1894 Liberty Head $5 gold pieces were struck over a century ago at the Philadelphia Mint - the birthplace of America`s coinage. These coins were produced in a year that Philadelphia and other American cities were beginning to use electric power to light buildings and run trolleys. Texas at the time was primarily known as cattle country, until a water well in Corsicana began spewing gooey black stuff in 1894 that soon became known as "oil."
