As the 1892 Liberty Head nickel was being produced at the Philadelphia Mint, a Colorado gold rush was underway at Cripple Creek near Pike's Peak. The expression "Pike's Peak or Bust" came from intrepid gold seekers journeying to Colorado from all parts of the country; by 1900, Cripple Creek would have over 50,000 residents, dozens of mining companies, and over 100 saloons!
