In 1882, Thomas Johnson, an associate of Thomas Edison, lit the first electric Christmas tree lights in his home. The string Johnson lit contained only 80 bulbs, yet his tradition continues today. That same year, the Philadelphia Mint struck over 11 million Shield nickels – a fraction of today's nickel mintages – but this early nickel design has long since vanished from circulation.
