Due to widespread hoarding of coins during the Civil War era, Congress authorized the printing of fractional currency notes (with values less than a dollar) from 1862-1876. This 50¢ note is from the 1874-1876 Fifth Issue, and final issue, of fractional currency. The note bears a red Treasury Seal and a portrait of William H. Crawford, secretary of the war and treasury departments from 1815-1825. This prized Civil War – era collectible is printed on white paper with silk fibers and a blue right-end on the face.
