From 1862-1876, the U.S. government issued small denomination notes to solve a severe coin shortage caused by the Civil War. We’re offering these final – and scarce – 25¢ Fractional notes issued 1874-1876 in beautifully preserved Choice Crisp Uncirculated condition after nearly 150 years. The face depicts Robert J. Walker, Treasury Secretary under President James Polk.


Over 99% of all fractional notes were redeemed and destroyed. Finding well-preserved examples like the one offered here is getting more challenging. It’s taken us five years to find enough quantity for this catalog. We don’t often see them, and they are sure to go fast.
