1868 Shield Nickel

The new 5¢ piece quickly caught on with the public and became a staple in daily commerce. Unlike today, the nickel had lots of buying power back then. The obverse displays the motto in god we trust above the shield, and the reverse shows the numeral 5 (the denomination) within a circle of stars.
