The $50 note depicts Jefferson Davis, who served as U.S. secretary of war and U.S. senator from Mississippi before his election in 1861 as president of the Confederate States of America (CSA) for its duration. The seldom-seen $100 note bears a central portrait of Lucy Holcombe Pickens, who won the admiration of the Russian royal family while her husband, Francis Pickens, was serving as U.S. ambassador to Russia. After Francis Pickens returned to serve as governor of South Carolina and then to support the Confederacy, Lucy sold precious jewelry and other fine gifts from the Russian tsar to outfit a rebel unit dubbed the "Lucy Holcombe Legion." For this she became fondly known as the "Queen of the Confederacy." Two southern soldiers and a portrait of Confederate Secretary of War George Wythe Randolph are also seen on the $100 issue.
