Facing an uncertain future, Civil War families and soldiers hoarded small-denomination coins and created a severe coin shortage. Civil War tokens, worth a penny and also known as "Civil War cents", were struck by many different businesses and individuals. They circulated like cents from 1862-1864, until the federal government forbade their use.

Most of these tokens, which are prized Civil War collectibles, advertised the name of a shop or business and are called "store cards". But available here feature nationalistic images and symbols such as George Washington and the American flag, and slogans like union forever – and are known as "patriotic tokens".
