Now own a Southern States $5 note – still crisp even after more than 150 years. Issued at Milledgeville the capital of Georgia during the Civil War, these uniface notes recall the state's secession in 1861 and Sherman's entry into the capital three years later. Milledgeville became one of General William T. Sherman's targets on his "March to the Sea" in November 1864.
Today these are genuine artifacts of the Civil War and still in Crisp Unused condition. The first $5 was printed in January 1862. Each note has a Georgia Treasury seal stamped either on the face or back. Now that well over a century has passed, who knows how many still survive in this condition?
