Variety 2 - Stars on Obverse. This tiny silver Gem has extremely well-struck, lustrous surfaces that are slightly frosty and very appealing to the eye. Coins of 1856-1859 were the last of the series to use the Stars on Obverse design. In 1860, variety 4 - Legend on Obverse - came out, and was used until the series ended in 1873. The year 1857 witnessed the release of the first small- size cents, the Flying Eagle series.
