1854 $2.50 Liberty Head Gold Piece

A lovely specimen of rich gold color with red and olive highlights. Scarce in this condition, as quarter eagles of this time period were more of ten used domestically, while the larger gold denominations were popular in the export trade. Quarter eagle gold pieces were minted for the first time in San Francisco this year, as well as being produced in Philadelphia, Charlotte, Denver, and New Orleans. To date, PCGS has graded 17 at MS64 and only 5 at MS65.
